Recently there is a spate of fake SMS messages being sent out pretending to be Medicare and other organisations.
These fake messages are sent out in large numbers hoping to steal sensitive information about you to either sell to the black market or to steal your identity.
Please stay on guard as this is what we call social hacking and are produced to make you reveal a bit or more information about yourself so it can be used at a later date or sold on the dark web for fraudulent reasons.
A lot of these text messages will want you to click on a link and it will take you to a website that could look like Medicare, your bank, energy company or even email account.
Things to look out for:
- If you click on a link and it doesn’t take you to a familiar web address/URL – do not login, check and double check by typing the address yourself i.e. https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/medicare
- They provide short link that looks funny then avoid all together and call Medicare directly
- If they don’t address you by name you already know that it’s a mass message
- The official website can also be accessed through myGov portal – my.gov.au
